Volunteers Needed

Do you work in a STEM-related field? Have you wondered how you could help inspire and prepare more students into the STEM fields?  Medway High School is looking to expand participation of our Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Partnership.  We invite you to attend an informational meeting on October 4, 2016 in the High School Library at 5:30 pm. You will have the opportunity to learn what PLTW is all about, our vision for the future, and how corporate partners help us to provide relevant and exciting classes.

Welcome to POE!

This blog is for the students of POE to share their summaries and images of progress, projects, and related articles & videos with the Medway community and the world.  We have two questions that must be answered before we can go further.  The first is your homework tonight:

Who Are You?

1. Go to Google Classroom
2. Join the class with the code: getij9g
3. Complete the first assignment by 11:59pm Tuesday

The resulting slideshow will be embedded in the About section of this blog.  After all, you'll all be authors.

Who Are We?

The next day we'll collectively set norms for the class.  Think about the classes you've had.  Think about your ideal class.  What would it be like?  What would it not be like?  What should we expect of each other?

Looking forward to an exciting year!  We'll talk about more details soon, but first, let's get down to business.  You have two homework assignments tonight, due September 1st, Tuesday morning, 8:00 am:

Please spend a few minutes filling out this student info survey (also found on the classroom). You must log in with your @medwayschools.org account (if you haven't already).  Keep an eye on the assignment due date and time. This is due Tuesday morning by 8 am. Each entry is time-stamped; 8:01 am will be late and 1/2 credit.  Email me if you have difficulties with your @medwayschools.org account. If you need access to a computer, use the library or my room during study hall, before school, or after school.

Statics & Centroids!

Unit 2 - Statics and Materials.

Statics is the basis for the study of engineering mechanics and specifically rigid-body mechanics. Statics is concerned with the equilibrium of bodies that are at rest or that move at a constant velocity. Using measurements of geometry and force, Archimedes studied statics concepts in ancient Greece. Most of his work centered on simple machines for construction of buildings.

Our first static structures: the paper towers we built today. These 15 short rolls of paper held over 16 kg (35 lbs) without flinching. In this unit you will learn how to identify and calculate forces acting on a body when it is in static equilibrium.  You will determine the centroid, moment of inertia, and the modulus of elasticity of a structural member.  You will calculate internal and external forces of a truss.  Finally, you will use this knowledge to design, build, and test your own bridge.

Midterms have been graded and posted on the portal.
Good job everyone!  Very pleased with the results.

We'll finish the robotics events Wed, Thurs, and Monday after midterms and get those grades on this quarter.  I'm currently double checking the quarter 2 grades I have and will let you know when they are finalized.

Here's what's happening in POE:

Professional Interview Transcript

By end of day Monday, I need evidence that you completed your professional interview uploaded to Its Learning.  That can be a copy of the email, recorded conversation, etc.  You have another two weeks to write up the reflection.

1.1.4 Pulley Drives & Sprockets

For this activity you don't need the VEX kits.  Pulleys and sprockets behave very similarly to gears.

1.1.4 Conclusion Qs on Google Classroom

I'd like to try something new with the conclusion questions.  Instructions are on the last page of 1.1.4.  You're logging into Classroom.google.com, joining the class, and completing your questions right inside the google doc provided.  Once you click TURN IN, it switches edit rights and I'll grade it.  If this goes well, this may be how we do certain assignments from now on.  Let me know what you think.

1.1.5 Gear & Pulley Practice Problems

Instead of checking your answers in class on Monday, I'll give you two more days to check them on Its Learning on your own time by Wednesday.  I'd rather devote the class time to building your compound machine.

1.1.6 Compound Machine

Next week we meet 3 times, so you'll have 3 class days to build your compound machine.  Plan to use your class time for that.

Quiz Reflection

You have until Thursday to complete the quiz reflection to earn back up to 1/2 the points you lost.  Its recommended but not required.
